great news...

This is an article from The San Diego Reader... it's about a "Radio Recession." Good for the new generation of music, bad for the old and moldy. Read it.

One radio veteran says the recession may be good news for people who want to hear more music on the radio.

“Radio advertising was down last year,” says the local deejay. “Then the recession hit. Right now, Clear Channel has been hit by a perfect storm,” he says, because contract renewals for expensive morning shows will eventually come up for renegotiation.

Clear Channel has the highest-paid local morning shows in town. Insiders estimate that the radio group is on the hook for $8 million to $10 million in annual salaries for its morning shows. On Star 94.1 (Jeff and Jer) and 101.5/KGB (Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw), it is estimated that each team gets between $2.5 million and $4 million a year.

Other Clear Channel contracts are with Rock 105.3’s Mikey Show and New Country 95.7’s Tony & Kris. Each ensemble is estimated to make $1 million annually. Channel 933’s AJ’s Playhouse has a payroll estimated in the $500,000 range.

Radio advertising in June was down 17 to 18 percent from last year.

“That’s unprecedented,” says one exec. “If you get a decrease in 8 to 10 percent in one year, that’s considered really bad. This is a train wreck.”

The deejay says, “Car [dealerships] used to be radio’s biggest spenders. Have you noticed how few car spots there are on the radio now? Advertisers have started shifting from radio to other media.”

Recently, Media Audit announced a survey that indicated adults in San Diego spend more hours per week on the Internet (three and a half hours) than listen to terrestrial radio (almost two and a half hours per week).

“It’s so much cheaper to send out an email to two million people than to buy time on radio,” says the deejay. “Look how well Google does. Plus, people are now consuming their music elsewhere, like iTunes, Pandora, and Live 365.”

Another insider says though morning-show deejays may not make as much on their next contract, they are not destined for extinction.

“Where would KGB be if Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw went away? That station dies in the middays and afternoon; Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw make that station what it is.”

a thought...

Photobucket
Last night at work, I was talking to my buddy Daniel about radio and how I think it needs to change.

I started out by saying how much I don't like the White Stripes because it's overplayed and there is hardly any talent in the drummer chick. Sorry but she sucks. And for them to get sooo much airplay its ridiculous.

Anyways this lead to our convo on radio and how it should change. I told him it needed to change for all aspects of music. Why play the same songs over and over when anyone can get those songs with just a click of the mouse. What happen to radio being the source to let people in on some great music. Now it just plays the same old crap that they've been playing for over a decade. Nirvana, RHCP, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Linkin Park, Sublime... all that same crap. Ok so who that likes these bands don't have one of there albums... do they really need to hear Sublime 50 times a week... Any fan of Sublime would have the album. They don't need to hear it when they got the disc or mp3s.

My point is that the internet has opened up the music industry (while destroying it) but everyone that looks for new music doesn't have to go to the radio to search for the latest new music. They goto myspace, purevolume, or rhapsody... Why can't the radio be what it use to be. A source to hear new stuff. Why all the same stuff. What would it be like if radio had a station that played everything and anything they found on the internet. Would you listen more? or not at all because you would rather hear Nirvana 5 times in a day? Would you actually go to the radio to hear something maybe you never heard before... song after song.. .Would there actually be the need of a DJ to say who that artist is. I mean seriously do we need a DJ to tell us that was Foo Fighters or The white Stripes... are we that stupid that we don't know who Nirvana is.

We need the radio revolution for our generation.

We need diversity, which some say they are.

Embrace the internet music and make it on the airwaves.

When will that happen.

Want to be a part of the revolution. Make it happen. Post the picture above somewhere. Share with others.

Some New Art....

Been working on some new art... .check it out. It's not yet up on my site but here is a preview.

God or julie...

So it's about that time you check some new bands out... as well as myself. One band that has been on radar is 'God or Julie'.

God or Julie, a band from somewhere in New York, has a smooth sound. Subtle piano and guitar rifts make for a great sound that doesn't get caught up in the cookie cutterness of other bands these days.

If you were a fan of Matchbook Romance then you must already know that old MR drummer, Aaron Stern is the drummer for God or Julie, who once was flown out to the Projekt Revolution tour to sit in for Taking Back Sunday on the drums!

Trust me, this will be one band that is on the slow rise. Check em out!
